The Ole Ball Game

While trying to avoid being struck by a pitch, the ball hits the bat into play. Is that a fair ball?

Rob asked: While trying to avoid being struck by a pitch, the ball hits the bat into play.

Is that a fair ball?

Rick answered: Rob, thank you for your question.

As described, it would be a fair ball.

The most common scenario is one where the pitch is headed straight for the hitter, who drops down to avoid the ball; but leaves the bat barrel up and it contacts the ball.

As long as the ball lands, and stays in fair territory, it is a fair ball.

In the image above, it the pitch thrown had not touched the hitter; but did contact the bat and rolled out fair, it is live.

Makes for a tough at bat.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
