What MLB pitcher has the most wins and saves in a single season?

Mariano Rivera

Mariano Rivera

Brandon asked: What MLB pitcher has the most wins and saves in a single season?

It seems the stats favor starting pitchers and modern closers. My guess would be a middle reliever or old-school relief pitcher. Thanks.

Rick answered: Brandon, thank you for your question.

I will need some clarification on this. Not quite sure what you are looking for.

Single season MLB saves leader is Francisco Rodriguez, California Angels 2008, 62 saves.

Single season wins is Old Hoss Radbourn, 59 in 1884, Providence Grays NL

My original thought was you are looking for the pitcher who has the most single season wins and saves, combination.

Career saves leaders:

1. Mariano Rivera 652 saves/82 wins/total 734, all in 1283.2 innings pitched.

2. Trevor Hoffman 601 saves/61 wins/total 662, all in 1089.1 innings pitched.

3. Dennis Eckersley 390 saves/197 wins/total 587, all in 3,285.2 innings pitched.

4. Goose Gossage 310 saves/124 wins/total 434, all in 1,809.1 innings pitched.

If I am on the wrong track, please re-post and I will give it another shot.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
