The Ole Ball Game

What happens to a hitter while during his plate appearance the third out is made in an errant attempt by a runner to steal a base.

Out at Second

Out at Second

Todd asked:So a hitter is up at the plate with two outs.

A runner at first attempts to steal second base and is thrown out thus making the third out.

What happens to the hitter?

Does he regain an attempt at the plate the next time his team bats or is that scored as a sacrifice/ fielder's choice charged to his plate appearance?

Rick answered: Todd, thank you for your question.

The batter becomes the lead-off hitter when that team comes back in to hit.

incomplete plate appearance NEW
by: Carl Moore

If you are scoring the game and a batter is left in the batter's box when a runner is put out (picked off or caught stealing) for 3rd out, the batter is not out or left on base. He starts his plate appearance all over again at start of next inning, because the batter before him was the last to complete a plate appearance for his team. A plate appearance is complete when the batter is put out or becomes a runner.

Th question has definitely crossed my mind and although I played ball myself as a kid, I forgot the protocol for that one. Thanks for the update.
