On base percentage + Slugging percentage = OPS
Fellini asked: When a batter comes to the plate-the graphics come up. What does ops mean?
Rick answered: Fellini, thank you for your question.
A players ops stat is his on base percentage plus his slugging percentage, added together.
Ops is seen as a better statistic to evaluate hitters than simply batting average, as it shows how much he gets on base, as well as his true power; it records the doubles and triples a hitter gets, both of which are an indication of a hitter's power.
The higher the number the better.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
