third pitch foul ball back to catcher
by Matty
(Congers, NY USA)
Matty asked: If a catcher catches a third pitch foul ball on his chest, is it a out?
Rick answered: Matty, thank you for your question.
Sec 9 Catch, catcher, catcher's box, Art 1...A catch is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a live ball in flight and firmly holding it, provided he does not use his cap, protector, mask, pocket or other part of his uniform to trap the ball.
If he uses his protector or his body to secure the ball, it becomes a foul ball, at bat continues.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
