Sac fly or out?
by Doug
(Battle Creek, Mi.)
Doug asked: Runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.
Fly ball caught by an outfielder, runner on third tags.
Runner on first thinks there are 2 outs and is running.
Outfielder throws to first to get third out, runner on 3rd scores before first baseman catches the ball.
Does the run count?
Rick answered: Doug, thank you for your question.
The run counts because the runner from third touched home plate prior to the third out being recorded at first base.
It is the same situation you often see, with a first and third, two outs.
The runner on first base purposely gets himself picked off, then breaks for second base.
The 1B comes off the base and throws to the SS covering second, the runner from first stops and gets into a rundown.
The runner from 3B is going on the 1B's throw to second, runner from 1B attempts to avoid being tagged until after the runner from 3B has touched home plate.
Both are continuation of the live ball and the run counts because it scores prior to out number 3.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
