The Ole Ball Game

Runner at 1st, ball hit to second baseman, he bobbles the ball and flicks it to 2nd for the out. Should he have gone to first, or is this fielders preferrence?

Scott asked: Runner at first, ball hit to second baseman, he bobbles the ball and flicks it to 2nd for the out.

Should he have gone to first, or is this fielders preference? Cal Ripkin league coach.

Rick answered: Scott, thank you for your question.

What you are looking for is an out somewhere in that situation.

Even with the bobble, if he was able to get the out on the lead runner, that is the best place to go. Should also have been his shortest throw.

Number of outs, the inning and score at the time can also be factors.

If you have time, go the shortest route. Had he been closer to first base it may have been easier to go to first base. All based on location and the game situation at the time.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
