The Ole Ball Game

Is it a homerun?

Home run or out, if the player catches the ball and falls into the stands?

Home run or out, if the player catches the ball and falls into the stands?

Devanand asked: The batter hits a deep fly ball in fair terriority.

The outfielder leaps in the air and catches the ball but his momentum takes over the fence without touching the ground in the field of play.

Is this a home run or is the batter out?

Rick answered: Devanand, thank you for your question.

It is catch, if the outfielder maintains control of the baseball.

If he loses control when he falls into the stands, then it would be a home run.

The situation is more prevalent on foul balls down the right and left field foul lines, as the fences are much lower. Most outfield fences are too high for players to get over them and into the crowd, but there are some places where it is possible.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
