if a ball is hit foul but a defenseive player touches it before it hits the ground is it fair or foul?

Is this fair or foul ball?

As described, the ball would be foul, as it is in foul territory.

Had the first baseman caught the ball before it hit the ground, and held on to it, the batter would be out.
