The Ole Ball Game

Coaching question

by Gerry G.
(Salinas, CA, USA)

Gerry asked: Runner on 2nd base with 2 outs.

Routine grounder hit to my 3rd baseman.

Should he still check the runner on 2nd in case he could have tagged him out?

Or don't even bother and just make the force out play at 1st?

Rick answered: Gerry, thank you for your question.

We teach our infielders to check. If the runner is willing to run into a tag, we'll take it any time.

We aren't looking for a rundown situation, too many things can go wrong should you get into one of those.

Look, no quick tag, throw across.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
