Batter bunts with runners in 1B and 3B does he get a hit if there is no throw to first when base run is safe at home?

Bunting for Base Hit

Bunting for Base Hit

Anonymous asked: Runners 1B and 3B, batter bunts.

The play to home is safe, catcher doesn't even throw to first, batter safe. No throw, batter is fast, would of never got him.

Does he get a hit on this?

Rick answered: Thank you for your question.

The official scorer has to determine, in his mind, whether he believes the batter/runner would have been safe, even if the defense fielded the ball cleanly and made a good throw.

A base hit is credited to a batter when he advances to first base safely:

a. because of his fair hit

c. because of a fielder's choice (2-14-1) when a fielder attempts to put out another runner but is unsuccessful and the scorer believes the batter- runner would have reached first base even with perfect fielding.

Based on your description of this situation, I believe the batter would be credited with a base hit and an rbi.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
