After laying down a bunt, where whould the batter ideally place the bat

Anonymous asked: After laying down a bunt, where should the batter ideally place the bat?

There is debate whether it should be in fair or foul territory.

Rick answered: Thank you for your question.

It is better if you can drop your bat in foul territory, so there is no chance of the bat hitting the ball, in fair territory, after it is bunted. If that happens, it would be interference, dead ball, batter would be out.

I am right handed, if I am pushing the ball up the 1B side, dropping it out to my right gets it out of the way the quickest.

Up the 3B side, my hands are extended that direction, so I drop it to my left.

Just personal preference, nothing scientific. Biggest thing to avoid is putting it out, into fair ground, where it could contact the live ball.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
