What is the job of the guys dressed like umpires sitting in the stands with their backs to the play?

Anonymous asked: What is the job of the guys dressed like umpires sitting in the stands with their backs to the play? About officials.

Rick answered: Thank you for your question.

Judging by the positioning you describe and their having their backs to the field of play, they must either be security personnel or stadium workers.

MLB umpire crews for the World Series consist of 6 umpires :

  • Behind home plate.

  • First base.

  • Second base.

  • Third base.

  • Right field line.

  • Left field line.

As you look at the image above, the crew positioned in this regular season MLB game consists of 4 umpires, all located in the infield positions listed above.

With the playoffs and World Series, two additional umpires are added, one down each foul line.

All are located on the field of play, with their sole responsibility being the administration of the game itself.

Anyone located in the stands in an official capacity, would generally be stadium security.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
