Bob asked: The team had two outs with the bases loaded. The batter hits a ground ball between the short stop and third that hits the runner heading to third. How does the score keeper score the batter and how does he score the runner who was hit by the ball?

Rick answered: Bob, thank you for your question.

The runner is scored as a Put out, the put out credited to the closest infielder at the time he was hit, in this case probably the third baseman or the shortstop.

The runner being hit is the third out of the inning, the ball becomes dead.

The batter is scored as a fielders choice.

Rick

There were 2 outs NEW
by: Anonymous

The situation was 2 outs in the inning. In this scenario, a batted ball hits the runner in fair territory the runner is out (End of inning) Batter is given a FC. Less than 2 outs, the runner is out, the closest fielder gets credit for the putout, and the batter gets a hit.

Scoring a Grond Out with RBI NEW
by: Lynn

When a ground ball is hit, the batter is thrown out at first base but a run scores from third: is this scored as an at bat or does it not hurt the batting average similar to a sacrifice fly ball or sac bunt?

How do you score a batter rhat coach gives the hit and run sign to with a runner on third? Runner scores but batter out at first. Seems similar to sac bunt????

The batter is scored as having made a hit, not a fielder's choice.
