The Ole Ball Game

Is it an error in high school softball?

by kim
(arkansas)

Kim asked: Is it an error if the pitcher fielding the ball throws the girl out at first base (not the third out) but; the bases has one runner and that is on third and that runner scores to end the game?

Rick answered: Kim, thank you for your question.

The situation you described would be the same for softball or baseball, at all levels.

There are no errors officially recorded for mental errors committed by players, only physical ones.

The pitcher fielded the ball, and threw the runner out at first base, recording an out on the play, so no error would be charged.

Certainly a tough way to lose a game; but no damage done to the pitcher's fielding average.

Rick

Third baseman would get the error, no physical error charged on a mental error by a player.

No error given, if the official scorer believed that the runner would have been safe, even with a good throw.

If on a bunt in softball the third baseman fields the play and comes up throwing but the second baseman who is supposed to be covering first is not there, who gets the error? The third baseman stops her throw but it falls out of her hand but no one advanced any further.
