Collision an Error?

by Greg
(Santa Maria, CA)

Base hit, no error.

Base hit, no error.

Greg asked: Situation - Nobody on, nobody out in a high school game.

Ground ball hit up the middle, but slightly toward the left side of the field.

Shortstop moves to his left an makes a good play fielding the ball. There is a chance that he can throw out the batter/runner.

Unfortunately, the second baseman comes over (way out of position) and collides with the shortstop preventing him from making his throw.

Is this an error on the second baseman?

Thanks,
Greg

Rick answered: Greg, thank you for your question.

No error on the play. The collision scenario would play out the same in all collision situations, it is a misplay, but a mental or hustle one.

Hitter gets a base hit, coaches have an opportunity to discuss the importance of team communication.

Rick
