Ron asked: Outfielder places his hat on the ground before the pitch, the batted ball is hit to the outfield and rolls and hits the hat on the ground, what do you have?

Rick answered: Ron, thank you for your question.

Based on your description, that the players cap was placed on the ground before the pitch.

For there to be an infraction, the player would have to deliberately detach the cap, and with the cap in his control, make contact with the baseball.

Similar situation to throwing your glove at the ball, it has to be deliberate.

Should have been a no call, ball and play remain live.

Have to wonder what the odds are of that situation coming up. Lot of things have to fall into place.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
