The Ole Ball Game

Even the greatest pitchers have an ERA.

by Robbie
(Lakehills, Tx)

Robbie's Quote: We often try to console young pitchers who have had a bad outing or pitched well but gave up some runs and lost a game, but a young pitcher commented to me once about having an ERA over 2 and stated that he would never be a great pitcher. That's when I told him that even the greatest have an ERA!

Rick's comment: Robbie, great quote. How true! Quite often young pitchers feel they need to be almost perfect to be considered great. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sandy Koufax once said," I became a good pitcher when I stopped trying to make them miss the ball and started trying to make them hit it."

Takes a lot of pressure off them once they realize they are going to give up hits and runs. It is how they react to those events that ultimately decides their futures in this game.

Thank you again for your quote.

Yours in baseball,

Rick
